Ripened Moon
2025
Taipei Biennial 2025: sculpture approx. 60 × 60 × 45 cm
Hysteresis 2026: sculpture and pedestal approx. 85 × 75 × 145 cm
Video duration: 1 min 56 sec
Worn cotton-polyester socks purchased from a pregnant mother through a Taiwanese online foot-fetish marketplace on Twitter; plastic, epoxy resin, steel, lead solder, acrylic paint and other mixed media. For the NCCU presentation, the sculpture is supported by a pedestal constructed from steel and vacuum-sealed clothing and blankets.
A video monitor displays footage of the seller wearing and removing the socks in her bedroom.
Originally commissioned by Taipei Biennial 2025.
Exhibition: Hysteresis, NCCU Arts & Culture Center, Taipei, 2026.
Ripened Moon develops the seller’s worn socks into an abstract body through digitally modelled forms inspired by pregnancy. Colours drawn from her photographs and video, including the orange of her T-shirt and the pink and purple of her toenail polish, enter the sculpture’s painted surfaces. Layers of dark, tinted resin embedded with splashes of melted lead solder suggest a night sky in which the rounded forms appear to float. For Hysteresis, a pedestal of vacuum-sealed clothing and blankets extends this constructed environment. Alongside footage of the seller in her bedroom, the sculpture gives a temporary, private exchange another duration, connecting the traces of one particular body with an expansive, almost cosmic space.
